The Next Chapter For Lodgepole Law

If you have known me for any length of time, you have probably heard me say that I went to law school because I hate lawyers.

Not all lawyers, obviously. I know some excellent attorneys, and I still believe a good lawyer can be worth every penny. But I have also seen too many lawyers treat business owners like files, billing events, or problems to be managed instead of people carrying real risk.

That never sat right with me.

I wanted to build a firm that understood owners. I wanted to serve the people who sign the front of the check, make payroll, take the risk, and live with the consequences after everyone else has given their advice and gone home.

That is where Lodgepole Law came from.

Effective immediately, Lodgepole Law is not accepting new clients or new legal matters. We will continue working with existing clients through the remainder of 2026 and will wind down active operations by December 31, 2026.

We Built Lodgepole For A Hard Season

Lodgepole started during the COVID shutdowns, when people were scared, business owners were under attack, and nobody knew what the next month was going to look like.

Deals froze. Contracts got questioned. Families panicked. Owners were trying to keep payroll alive while politicians and bureaucrats were deciding whose work was essential and whose life’s work could be put on hold.

We had an estate planning division because people needed help getting their affairs in order. We opened that work beyond business owners because regular families were scared too, and it was the right thing to do.

At the same time, business owners needed practical legal help from someone who understood ownership, risk, pressure, and the real cost of bad advice. We leaned into flat fees, practical guidance, strategic reviews, and business-focused legal work because the old model was already broken.

I am proud of that work.

We helped a lot of people who otherwise might not have had access to our level of experience, judgment, and practical business perspective. We helped owners through transactions, disputes, succession issues, risk management, growth questions, contract problems, and some incredibly difficult moments.

We also learned a tremendous amount.

The Legal Engagement Was Too Small For The Real Problem

The biggest lesson is that the legal issue is rarely the whole issue.

A contract dispute usually has a deeper business problem underneath it. A partner fight usually has years of unclear expectations behind it. An acquisition question involves valuation, financing, leverage, people, operations, timing, risk, and whether the deal makes sense in the first place. A succession issue is rarely solved by paperwork alone because it involves family, control, fairness, enterprise value, leadership, and whether the company is ready for what comes next.

The work that mattered most was usually bigger than the legal file.

More and more, I found myself serving as a strategist, translator, sounding board, and advisor for owners who needed help making better decisions. The legal analysis mattered, but the real value was often in helping the owner understand the whole situation and decide what to do next.

The World Changed, So We Are Changing With It

Technology is changing the legal industry, whether lawyers like it or not. Artificial intelligence and other tools are making certain kinds of legal work faster, cheaper, and more accessible.

I think that is a good thing.

Business owners deserve better tools, better access, and better ways to get help before problems become emergencies. I have no interest in defending an old model just because it is familiar.

The future of legal and business advisory work will belong to people who can combine judgment, systems, technology, experience, and practical strategy in a way that actually helps owners build better companies.

That is where my energy is going.

Where The Work Goes From Here

My mission has always been to help business owners build valuable companies that can run without them and, someday, sell when the time is right.

We did a lot of that work through Lodgepole, but I believe we can serve owners better through a broader set of companies, offers, tools, and advisory models.

For mergers, acquisitions, business sales, and transaction guidance, that work will continue through Sagewood.

For a small group of owners who want deeper strategic involvement, our fractional general counsel work is evolving into what I call the Special Advisor program. That work goes beyond legal risk. It is closer to a board-level advisor or quarterback role, helping owners think through growth, risk, succession, transactions, leadership, advisor coordination, and the bigger decisions that shape the future of the business.

Business Legal Fortress will continue as a framework, training platform, and education resource for owners who want practical tools, better decision-making, and stronger legal foundations without forcing every issue into a traditional legal engagement.

We are also working on several software and AI-native solutions that we expect to introduce later this year. Those tools are being designed to simplify access to the kinds of practical legal and business guidance we have historically delivered through one-on-one legal work.

There are a few other things in motion too, but those will have to wait until they are ready.

Thanks For Your Support & I’ll See You Later

Lodgepole was built for a season when people needed practical legal help in a hard moment.

We did that work, and I am grateful for every client, referral partner, conversation, and hard problem we were trusted to help with along the way.

Now the focus is shifting.

The mission is bigger than retainers, hourly billing, and one-off legal work. It is about helping business owners build stronger companies, create more value, make better decisions, and protect the freedom they started chasing when they became owners in the first place.

This is not goodbye.

It is see you later.

What To Do Next

If you have an active matter with Lodgepole Law, our team will be in touch over the coming weeks to discuss next steps.

Some matters will be completed. Some may be transitioned. Some may require a different attorney or specialist. Some may require us to reconcile balances, unused funds, scope, deliverables, or expectations before deciding the right path forward.

If you believe you have unused funds, prepaid services, outstanding deliverables, or an open legal matter, please reply to the email you received from us or contact our client services team directly.

If you owe a balance, we will address that as part of the transition. Outstanding invoices must be resolved before additional work is performed or before any unused balances are applied to other services.

If you are interested in Sagewood, Business Legal Fortress, the Special Advisor Program, or any of the new tools we are building, let us know. We will be sharing more information about those options as they become available.
